Where alchemy begins

In 2019, cocktail enthusiasts Leander Beuckels and Lucas Lambrechts founded Opius in Belgium. Together with master distiller Benedikt Sas – a professor at Ghent University – they are reimagining historical alchemy as a contemporary distillation craft. Their goal: elixirs with structure, depth, and distinctive character.

Small batches, clear handwriting

The essences are created using a three-stage extraction process from select botanicals. Traditional recipes are combined with modern distillation techniques to unlock the primal essence of herbs and spices. Subtle extracts of anise, cardamom, angelica, coffee, and caramel are extracted and artfully interwoven. Each batch comprises only about 200 bottles. The result is a nuanced aroma, full body, and a long finish.

Opius evokes the connection between manuscript and laboratory: clear lines, dark depth, a quiet, steaming cauldron. Neat, texture unfolds layer by layer; in highballs and signature cocktails, Opius incorporates citrus, tonic, soda, or even coffee.
